Garissa launches Jukwaa la Wasomi to boost security in higher learning institutions

The County Commissioner said the initiative aims to strengthen security in educational institutions to improve student safety. He emphasised that Garissa is a safe and welcoming place and encouraged more students to enrol in its respected institutions.

Garissa’s institutions of higher learning have launched Jukwaa la Wasomi, a security initiative designed to foster a peaceful environment conducive to academic growth.

The forum brought together key stakeholders, including the county security team led by Garissa County Commissioner Mohamed Mwabudzo Ramadhan, university and college deans, chiefs, and student leaders.

The County Commissioner said the initiative aims to strengthen security in educational institutions to improve student safety. He emphasised that Garissa is a safe and welcoming place and encouraged more students to enrol in its respected institutions.

Speaking to the press, Mwabudzo stated that the forum, a collaboration between the United Nations and the Kenyan government, seeks to address issues of peace and security in the region’s education sector.

“Garissa is a safe and welcoming place, home to respected institutions of higher learning. We encourage more students to enrol here,” he said.

He assured that comprehensive security assessments would be carried out across institutions to evaluate current safety protocols and make improvements where necessary.

The Commissioner also revealed plans to hold quarterly meetings to review progress and engage with school administrations to ensure student safety both on and off campus.

Dr Rosalia Mumo, Dean of Students at Garissa University, voiced full support for the initiative.

“We are committed to creating a peaceful environment so that our students can thrive academically,” she said. “I urge young people in Garissa to participate in the Jukwaa la Wasomi forum and help shape a brighter future.”

Dekow Diis, Garissa University’s Chief Security Officer, stressed that security is a collective responsibility.

“Without security, there can be no economic progress,” he said. “A peaceful environment is crucial to ensuring that our youth are ready to contribute to the workforce.”

Murimi David, the Students’ Secretary-General at Garissa Teachers’ Training College, praised the forum as a vital step towards strengthening security.

“Every stakeholder, from students to security officers, must work together to safeguard the well-being of our students,” he said.

The Jukwaa la Wasomi forum concluded with a joint commitment to strengthen security across all Garissa campuses, recognising peace as fundamental to fostering academic excellence.
